It started at Starbucks.

We’ve all been there. We’re offered Monday morning donuts, juice and cookies at a community gathering, or even asked if we’d like a cinnamon roll at Starbucks.

Every day, temptation take us by the hand (hint, hint: 11/5/12 is National Doughnut Day) and bring us one step closer to multiple cavities and obesity.

We should have seen it coming.

Let me explain.

One afternoon a few years back, I took my son Mitchell into Starbucks to grab a mid afternoon coffee. He was probably only 4 or 5 years old at the time.

Given that I expected it was snack time, I asked Mitchell at the counter if he’d like something to eat. His response: “Daddy, why do they only offer desserts?”

Though I don’t recall my reaction, his reply hit home. Our society offers too many sweet choices and not enough healthy options.

We need a change. Convenience foods, cheap prices, corporate profits and sheer laziness are solidifying America as the fattest nation on earth.

So the next time you or your child is hungry, skip the candy, soda, and salty snacks and reach for something Mother Nature created (fruits or vegetables are a good start).

Your body, waist line and your children will thank you.

What ways are you creating good food choices for yourself or others? Can you suggest just one healthy snack that others can incorporate into their diet today?
